Statistics shows that one in ten people has kidney stones at any point of the lifetime? Latest studies have confirmed that the incidence of kidney stones is greater than ever.
Moreover, about half a million people ‘visit’ emergency rooms, and complain of their kidney issues.
What are kidney stones?
Chemicals in urine create hard objects, or kidney stones. Urine carries dissolved waste material. The crystallization process occurs when small amounts of liquid carries too much waste.
Crystals join with other elements in solid formations that may grow over time if not expelled through the urine. Kidneys eliminate these chemicals through the urine. These organs are often referred to as ‘the body’s master chemists.’
Proper amount of liquid flushes the chemicals out, and thus prevents the formation of kidney stones. Calcium, oxalate, urate, cysteine, xanthine, and phosphate are the chemicals that participate in the formation of stones.
Once they are formed, kidney stones settle in the kidney or flow down the urinary tract and end up in the ureter. It is pretty possible that urine carries tiny stones out of the body, and usually this is a painless process.
“But stones that don’t move may cause a back-up of urine in the kidney, ureter, the bladder, or the urethra. This is what causes the pain.”
The formation of kidney stones is triggered by insufficient water intake, excessive/insufficient physical activity, obesity, weight loss surgery, too salty/sugary foods, etc. Infections or genes may sometimes be the underlying cause.
Excessive consumption of fructose increases the risk of kidney stones. Fructose is contained in refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
Drink plenty of filtered water and other fluids to prevent the formation of kidney stones.
Avoid foods with high oxalate content. When combined with calcium, oxalate and iron convert into crystals that form larger stones or get eliminated through the urine. Large stones may block the kidney tubules. Avoid peanuts, almonds, wheat bran, spinach, black tea, cashews, hazelnuts, soybeans, soy milk, instant tea, rhubarb, beets, sweet potatoes, dried beans and chocolate.
Cut down animal protein.
If you have kidney stones, avoid salt and sodium at any cost. Reduce your intake in oxalate-rich foods. You should also limit the intake of foods packed with calcium, potassium, protein and fluid. The recommended daily intake of sodium is 2,000mg per day.
Always check the label of your food, and avoid calcium-rich foods. Consult your doctor, and determine which are the best foods for your condition, and eat healthy doses.
Extra tip:
Drink a glass of water before you go to bed, throughout the night (if you are awake) and before you go back to bed.
Citric acid in lemons breaks up calcium crystals.
Watermelon is often recommended to patients with kidney stones. It is a strong diuretic and contains more water than other fruits, which means it stimulates the elimination of kidney stones.
Potassium also dissolves kidney stones.
Drink plenty of water and citrus juices. Is there any better way of dissolving kidney stones naturally?
